Viceroy electric glider.
Boston-based company Regent has received approval in principle (AiP) from Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore for the design of its novel Viceroy electric marine glider, a wing-on-ground effect vehicle that travels exclusively on water. Regent's Viceroy is the world's first electric glider, a hybrid vehicle described as part plane , part boat .
This AiP marks an important certification milestone for gliders, providing a clear path to the vehicle's classification as a wing-in-ground (WIG) maritime vessel and the commencement of commercial glider operations. Regent currently has a backlog of $ billion in provisional orders for its marine gliders from ferry and aviation operators.
Bureau Veritas is a leading global classification society backed by years of experience in the review and approval of new seagoing vessels such as Regent's Seaglider. Regent has been collaborating with engineers from Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore for months. The AiP includes a series of workshops covering aspects of vehicle structure, mechanical systems, avionics, propulsion and safety systems.
Throughout the process, Bureau Veritas provided preliminary expert advice with a focus on early identification of rules and regulatory framework for glider classification. This AiP marks an important mil Brazil Mobile Number List estone for Regent before series production of the new electric glider begins. It is an important step forward in enabling marine glider operations in countries around the world.
This in-principle approval will be followed by a design evaluation process, a series of technical studies now underway that will enable implementation of the design and operation of the glider without significant risk of compliance or qualification issues.
The Viceroy electric glider is a wing-on-ground effect craft that operates just a few meters from the water surface and combines the high speed of an airplane with the low operating cost of a boat. The company says its vehicle will service routes up to miles with existing battery technology and routes up to miles with next-generation batteries, all through existing dock infrastructure. The ship is designed to carry up to passengers. When it hits the water, the Viceroy takes it up a notch, being able to reach up to km/h.
Full-scale prototypes will begin sea trials in , and the company plans to launch its first electric Viceroy in
