The Australian ultramarathoner and environmental activist Mina Guli is in our country as part of the challenge of completing 200 marathons in one year, to raise awareness about the global water crisis, its effects in the future and inspire action by governments and companies. This is within the framework of World Wetlands Day , which is celebrated annually on February 2.
At 52 years old, Mina is the driving force of the Middle East Mobile Number List global RUNBLUE campaign and, since March 2022, she has traveled to various parts of the world with high water stress, with the purpose of mobilizing society for the next World Water Conference of the United Nations, which will be held from March 22 to 24 in New York, the first summit of its kind in almost 50 years.
During his stay in Mexico City, he will run marathons number 166, 167 and 168.
Bayer, as a campaign partner, joins Mina to raise awareness about one of humanity's greatest challenges, reaffirm the company's commitment to raising awareness about proper water management and inspire more companies to implement plans that improve the use of this vital natural resource.
For Mina, “the world must realize the worsening of our water crisis. Water is everything, yet decision makers often treat it as if it were nothing. Governments and companies must act now to address water risks in Mexico and around the world to ensure there is enough water for everyone. Therefore, it is essential to invest in the protection and restoration of healthy rivers, lakes and wetlands, because water does not come out of the tap. "It comes from nature, from the wetlands."
An urgent call
Data reveals that currently, about 2.2 billion people do not have access to safe drinking water today and almost two-thirds of the total world population face severe water shortage for at least one month a year. Furthermore, by the year 2050, 10 billion people could inhabit the planet and demand for the vital liquid could increase by 57%.
In Mexico between 12.5 and 15 million inhabitants do not have access to drinking water, according to the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), which represents approximately 10% of the population. Among those who do access, almost 30% do not have sufficient quantity or quality.
According to the World Resources Institute, our country is one of the 25 countries in the world that faces greater water stress, in addition to the fact that 70% of rivers, lakes and dams have some degree of contamination, according to a study on the protection of bodies of water in 2018, carried out jointly by the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) and UNAM.

The importance of helping
In 2015, the world committed to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 as part of the 2030 Agenda: the promise that everyone would have safely managed water and sanitation by 2030. Therefore, working hand in hand with the campaign RUNBLUE joins our other efforts and actions to improve the quality of life on a healthy planet.
Bayer is part of the group of international leading companies in the area of sustainable water management, according to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) rating organization.
According to its own information, the CDP compared the strategies and actions for efficient use and protection of this most valuable natural resource in more than 600 large companies worldwide. Bayer was one of 24 companies that obtained the highest “A” grade.
«Resource efficiency has been a central part of our sustainability strategy for years. We seek to reduce hunger, reduce issues of health, poverty, diversity and inclusion, water and climate change, all of this is in our daily lives," commented Manuel Bravo, general director of Bayer Mexico.
